Clarendon scholarship is a fully-funded scholarship for international students to study at the University of Oxford. The Clarendon scholarship offers over 130 new scholarships every year to incoming graduate students. This making it the most sought scholarship program at the university. The University of Oxford is located in London the capital of England in the United Kingdom.

The Clarendon scholarship program was introduced in the honor of one of the late ex-vice chancellor of the University of Oxford. Thus. Edward Hyde also knew as the Earl of Clarendon was well known for his act of philanthropy. In other words,  in recognition of his generous acts, the Clarendon fund was developed.

Thus, the major purpose of Clarendon scholarship is to assist sound outstanding students in their academics. The scholarship program is targeted at graduate courses in the school. Hence, they are over 450 courses in this category available at the University of Oxford. Therefore, this makes the scholarship program a competitive one and the most sought for.  The Clarendon fund is also in a bid to promoting academic excellence in the school both in research and educational programs. Funding of the Clarendon Scholarship:

The Clarendon scholarship has the capacity funding of awarding a fully-funded scholarship to over 130 students every year. This is made possible because of the several organizations funding this scholarship program. Thus, apart from the assistance gotten from the school in funding the awards, other partnership awards include in the Clarendon’s fund which makes it possible for an extra 40 awards to the program. Funding for the Clarendon scholarship program is regularly maintained by the Oxford University Press (OUP), alongside University trust funds, many other Oxford’s colleges, departments, academic divisions, and external partners.

Benefits of Clarendon Scholarship:

  • The Clarendon scholarship program covers the full tuition of the intending course one applied for. The scholarship runs through the duration of the student’s course.
  • The scholarship is open to any full-time or part-time course offered in the university.
  • Each scholar is given an annual grant to cover living expenses. The grant is given at the least rate of minimum Research Council doctoral stipend rate (for full-time courses). While for part-time courses, it is given at the rate of sixth of the minimum Research Council Doctoral stipend rate for art-time master program and sixth of the rate for part-time DPhil courses.
  • For part-time modular fee structure courses, the scholarship program will cover all the registration and other fees therein.

The number of students to be awarded is not specified. Though, Clarendon scholarship awards over 130 international students every year.

Eligible Countries:

The scholarship application is open to all international students applying for a graduate program at the University of Oxford.

Eligibility Criteria:

The eligibility criteria for this scholarship program is based on academic achievements. Thus, preference is given to those with greater academic results to others. Though, the selection process varies with respect to the field of study of the applicant.

Note: Students with deferred admission are not eligible for this scholarship application.

Field of Study:

There are no field of restriction for the Clarendon scholarship program. Thus, the scholarship program is open to all graduate courses studied at the University of Oxford. 

How To Apply:

Application for the Clarendon scholarship program is done automatically on application of a graduate course at the University of Oxford. In other words, you must apply for either full- or part-time Masters or DPhil course at Oxford by the January deadline for your course. After which you will be considered for the course. Therefore, students do not need to submit any other special application to apply for the scholarship program as none was provided.

Though, it is necessary you apply for your desired program before the stipulated January deadline for your intending course of study.

Selection Procedure Timeline:

  • After submission of application before the January deadline for applicants desired course.
  • Your application to your course will be considered by academics working in your proposed field of study. They will assess the academic quality and suitability of your application.
  • The department will make the final decision on your graduate place and will notify you with an outcome. See the decision timeline for more details.
  • In parallel, academics within your department will determine who to nominate to the division for a Clarendon scholarship based on the selection criteria.
  • The process varies between the University’s academic divisions and the Department for Continuing Education, but each meets in February or March to review the departmental scholarship nominations.
  • The academic divisions assess the nominations on their academic merit and future potential and the top-ranked departmental nominees within the division are shortlisted for Clarendon.
  • Once the shortlist is confirmed, the Clarendon Fund Administrator will contact successful applicants and will provide the scholarship offer letter.
  • If you are offered (and accept) a Clarendon scholarship, this means your funding is now secure, as long as you meet the conditions of your offer of a place to study at Oxford.
  • During April and May, Clarendon Partnership Awards are matched to scholars depending on the award requirements. No further information is required of Clarendon offer holders.
  • Once each scholar’s unique funding package is confirmed, they will receive the funding breakdown letter outlining the funding arrangements. Final college placements will also be confirmed alongside partnership awards.
  • All successful Clarendon candidates will be contacted via email. Most of the offers are dispatched out by early April of each year.
  • Due to the number of eligible applicants, unsuccessful students will not be contacted. If you have not heard from us by June, please assume that unfortunately you have not been awarded a Clarendon scholarship.
  • A few late nominations may take place during the summer period if nominated students withdraw, however, this is very rare.
